Of Mana and Mentors
It was pure, unfortunate coincidence that Archie encountered Gabriel Casimir in the training rooms, because Dr. Vulcan hadn't yet asked Gabe to help train him. In fact, those plans weren't on the table at all now. Those two weren't exactly on the best of terms—or rather, Dr. Vulcan was not on the best of terms with Gabe...if the specification mattered. Regardless, what rare medical assistance the hunter needed now got delegated to Lucilia or Rin. Er, and Archie sometimes.
Archie himself had...a lot of terrible feelings about the matter. Most pressing of these was the knowledge that if he hadn't done that one fucking thing, his
What would Jurrian do?
It had long since ceased to be an actual question. Now it was a motivational statement, because the answer was always not what I’m doing right now. Jurrian wouldn’t wake up crying all the time. Jurrian would find a way to push past her fear. Jurrian wouldn’t let herself starve. Jurrian would find a way to survive.
Jurrian would pick this fucking lock.
It was one of many residential buildings in the area. Most of them were rusted and crumbling away; this one was no exception, but here, on one of the uppermost floors, there was a locked door. Pristine. Undented. It stood out, because on

It was almost five in the morning and they were the only two in the dingy, 24-hour restaurant. Really, he could’ve sat at any other table, but well...if he was going to stay here for very long, he should start making some friends. And they’d met before, right? Technically? Even if it was just for a couple of seconds and they hadn’t said anything to each other?

026: Forever and a Day
About twenty minutes ago, Lucilia had excused herself for the night and Archie had fallen asleep. Korai couldn't blame him, though he could have picked a better place to nap than a desk. It had been an eventful day for everyone on the ship—there'd been a minor skirmish early in the day, and while the attack was unlikely to have any far-reaching consequences, it meant that the sickbay had been busier than usual.
But a busy sickbay was one that afforded plenty of opportunities for training, and since Archie's own wounds were mild, Korai had taken advantage of them. Currently, Archie was his only student. Perhaps that was for the

Diana was nervous. Not the all-consuming terror that both her sister and her mother had assured her she would feel many times in the next 18+ years, but an irritated, impatient kind of nervous.
For heaven's sake, all she'd wanted to do was buy groceries; where in the world had he ran off to?
With a sigh, she glanced at her watch. What a waste of time! She had work to do at home, assignments to complete, assignments to grade, a dinner to make, and a house to reorder. This little shopping trip wasn't supposed to have lasted more than thirty minutes, but somehow, it had dragged into an hour. Briefly, fury coursed through her, but a

Standing just outside the Gabe's doorway, Archie took a moment to review the facts.
Fact number one: Gabe was much cooler than Archie. He was just better, in every conceivable way: his advice was more solid, his combat skills were more refined, he was more attractive...whatever the trait in question, Archie knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he'd never catch up to his friend, and that was a difficult pill to swallow.
Fact number two: "friend" wasn't really the right term anymore.
But that just made it even worse! Because fact number three was that, in comparison to Gabe (well, in comparison to anyone, really,) Archie wa

Nolan, was by most accounts, a person of some dignity. He'd finished high school a year early, a flawless G.P.A. and several college-level courses sealed in his academic records, and was definitely headed for something great--a scientist of some kind, or an engineer. He was smart, polite, and likable (if a bit awkward,) and also he was curled up in the fetal position on his best friend's bathroom floor, hair plastered to his face by sweat and post-vomit face-washing, shaking uncontrollably and muttering quiet, agonized swear worlds under his breath.
Like a good student.

Interlude: Happy Birthday, Archie!
Dear Archibald,
Your father may have told you that I am good with words, and that that is why I am such a successful lawyer, but more often than not, I cannot explain my feelings without long hours of reflection and revising. As it were, this letter is the fourth of its kind.
It cannot be justified. I will not tell you that I have always loved you, or even that I love you now; that would be a lie, and I will not do you that disservice.
When you left, there was simple nothing to feel. I do not know what it was like for you, though I can guess, but for me, it was simply the end of a short detour--exactly as it was when I left

Typically, Xander had him up as early as possible, explaining the day's schedule even as Jace struggled to chase the previous night's dreams away, but today, neither the android nor his computerized companion had spoken up, which was worrisome, at best. Where in the world would he be, if not here? Had he struck off on his own? Or had he been taken away? Jace scanned the room, but saw nothing out of the ordinary--the room was as sterile and orderly as ever: machines glowed and pulsed in the same rhythmic manner they always did. How The Grinch Saved Christmas
"A what?" Nolan blushed. "A Christmas tree." "What's that?" Nolan felt very silly. He pointedly ignored Arte's gaze, somehow intense and inquisitive even though her eyes were one undisturbed shade of green, and studied some of the plants in her - their - apartment, as though he was seeking out a suitable example. He kind of was, it could actually help. Searching for the right words didn't sound like a good enough reason to start a conversation and then abort it after one exchange. He heard Arte go back to the kitchen and tend to the pot roast. She was really good at picking up when he needed time and space. Almost as good as Focus. Christmas trees. "They're... evergreens. Pine needle trees," he added for clarification. He felt silly describing them that way. "Well I have a bunch of those!" Arte said cheerily. "I know you can grow them, but they need to be decorated." "How?" And time for another pause. The calendar system worked different here on Adelphi, or
"Westcott, you're late." If Archie had been lightly dozing before, you would never have known it from the way he shot up out of bed. Late?! Shit! He needed to freshen up and get dressed and grab coffee and he was in so much trouble, he- Rationality reasserted itself. He'd gotten off shift, had dinner, showered, gone to bed. And it was... 11:59pm, according to the clock near his bed. He wasn't late for anything, not even the New Year, which he wasn't staying up to celebrate... Well now he was, apparently. The question was, who had such a bad sense of humor? And how had anyone gotten into his room? Archie finally looked over at the voice, and almost had his second heart attack of the minute. He was staring at himself. But this version of himself looked different. He was taller, though not by much, and it wasn't entirely due to a couple of inches he'd seemingly gained. He stood taller. And, he seemed more at ease, in general. Archie studied this foreign version of him
